DIATOMACEOUS EARTH MINT Ants

Ants enter homes in search of food, water, or shelter. They follow pheromone trails left by other ants, creating highly organized “paths.” A single scout ant can attract an entire colony.

The things that attract ants the most are sugary foods, fats, crumbs, unprotected food leftovers, but also moisture and water sources (taps, sinks, plants).

To prevent ants from appearing, it is recommended to:
– Keep the house clean and dry
– Properly seal food
– Remove crumbs
– Regularly clean surfaces
– Seal cracks and entry points
– Use natural or mechanical barriers such as Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth is made of microfossil algae with microscopic sharp edges. When ants cross a treated surface, they become coated with the powder: it abrades their cuticle and absorbs protective lipids, causing irreversible dehydration.

This is a mechanical mode of action, without chemicals or resistance development. Unlike chemical insecticides that act through neurotoxicity or ingestion, Diatomaceous Earth kills through a physical process. Ants do not ingest it; they simply coat themselves as they cross the treated area. Result: no resistance, no adaptation, and a more environmentally friendly profile.

Silica (SiO₂) is the main component of Diatomaceous Earth. A high content—at least 90% for biocide-approved earth—ensures faster effectiveness against ants and other crawling insects.

Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is less pure, coarser, and not effective against ants because it does not sufficiently dry out their cuticle.

Simply allow the powder to settle for 2 hours before allowing children or pets into the treated area, and avoid inhalation during spraying. The goal is to block their paths and intercept the workers. Mint Diatomaceous Earth should ideally be applied:

• Along skirting boards

• In cracks and nest entrances, anthills

• In damp areas

• On window sills

• Behind appliances

• On observed ant trails

It does not directly kill the queen or the interior of the nest, as its action is not systemic. However, it kills the worker ants, interrupts food trails, disrupts the colony’s supply chain, and disorganizes the colony, which greatly reduces infestations by preventing colonies from developing and re-establishing.

For sustainable management, it is recommended to treat ant trails, nest entrances, and points of entry.

The effect is visible within a few hours, and the powder remains active for up to 3 weeks under optimal conditions. The aerosol ensures a homogeneous, non-volatile deposit, which significantly improves persistence compared to loose powder. Better adherence on ants, uniform coverage of protected surfaces, more precise deposit—even in cracks and hard-to-reach areas. This is a professional application, unlike traditional loose powder.
